4.30.19

This week we are discussing goods and services and the difference between them. We've had speakers come in to talk about their jobs and we've discussed if their job is selling goods or providing a service.

Mrs. Ortega's mom came in and talked to our classes about being a flight attendant.

We got to practice being a flight attendant and show the class the seatbelts, oxygen mask, life preservers and got to deliver drinks!

The firemen also came and talked to us about their jobs.

We talked about how scarcity looks around the world. We did a lesson to talk about how 1 in 6 kids don't have food and clean water.

We were put in small groups and everyone got to draw whatever they wanted to eat on their plate except for 1 of us. And the others were not allowed to share their crayon with the person that didn't have a crayon.

The conversations were great after.
"This isn't fair!"
"Everyone should get food!"

We talked about how some of us didn't even notice that 1 person wasn't getting to draw. We also talked about how there IS plenty of food in the world but it's scarce in some areas. We are also very thankful that there are programs around the world that try and help this problem. Rice Bowls is one of them.

Each learner was given a rice bowl to collect change in and these will be due in a couple of weeks.

4.24.19

Love this sweet message!

Exploring 3D shapes!

Exploring different kind of rocks and what products are made from them.

We learned about the word "scarcity". We talked about how there isn't always enough money, time, resources to have ALL the things we want. We did an activity about putting things in our pockets. We brainstormed things that could go in our pocket. We each got a sheet of paper and wrote down 1 thing we would want to put in our pocket.

We slowly started putting things in our "pocket".

More things...

The pocket is very full and uncomfortable.

To be more comfortable, I chose items for Mrs. Graves that I would want in my pocket. I had to make a choice about what got to be in and what I would not get to put in my pocket. We talked about how everyone's pocket would have different items because we all NEED and WANT different things.

We read a book called "General Store".  We talked about what general meant and what they might sell.

We brainstormed about what kind of store we would want to have if we could.

Then we made a tree map with the reasons why we would want to have that kind of store.

Today I introduced the words "withdrawal" and "deposit".
I read some scenarios that described either a withdrawal or deposit.

They held up whether they thought it was a withdrawal or deposit.

Then we wrote our own scenarios of withdrawals and deposits.
