9.10.10

We are working hard on place value this week!

Mrs. Hunt came in yesterday to talk to us about using Mackinva. This is a resource we will use for research.

We picked an animal at random. We researched what all this animal needs to survive.

Today we talked about how base ten blocks and how we can use them to represent a number. I passed out a 10s stick to each learner and asked them what they think of when they see it.

Then we made a life size base ten representation of our class. Each child got 1 yellow square to represent themselves.

We laid them all out and we had 20 (with Mrs. Graves included).

We line them up to see if we could make any tens. We were able to make 2!

I showed them these pictures side by side. On the left there are 20 ones. On the right there are 2 tens. These both represent the number 20.

We hung these out for all to see!

We took the information we learned yesterday about our animal's needs. I passed out to each child a habitat that our animal did NOT belong in. They were told to help this animal survive in the foreign habitat. They need to remember what their animal needed to eat, drink, sleep, breathe and live. This was quite challenging at times but they did a great job!

We practiced partner reading today!
